How we benefit from being a Builder 20 and NAHB member

John Merrill Homes Custom Designed Home

Being members of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB member) and joining the Builder 20 group has helped us grow our business, become better business owners, and improve our skills. The NAHB is one of the largest trade associations in the United States, representing the interests of home builders, developers, contractors, and associated businesses.

Joining the organization’s Builder 20 group was a game-changer for our business. The NAHB’s 20 clubs are the only industry-related program structured for CEOs to meet with other building CEOs, presidents, owners and partners in home building and remodeling firms. This group consists of builders and remodelers from non-competing markets (at least 100 miles apart from one another) who come together to share expertise, learn from each other, and improve their operations.

I’m the chairperson of our group of 17 members. We meet twice a year. A facilitator attends all meetings to help coordinate meetings, pick and provide speakers, gain access to sponsored vendors, and other meeting administration.

The collective experience and knowledge within our Builder 20 Group add so much value to our company. From seasoned veterans to those just starting, we’ve formed bonds that go beyond business, becoming a supportive family that shares wisdom and guidance.

We also enjoy attending the NAHB International Builders’ Show (IBS) every year. Here’s our round-up of the trends we spotted at the 2024 show.

Here’s our Builder 20 group last fall in Hilton Head, SC.

How being a Builder 20 member makes us better builders

Confidentiality and support

Confidentiality is key within the Builder 20 Group, and all club members sign confidentiality agreements, allowing members to discuss pressing business issues openly and honestly. With support from fellow builders, we’ve been able to tackle challenges head-on. It’s a lot like having a board of directors with a small business.

Ongoing camaraderie

The exchange of ideas extends beyond the scheduled meetings. Members continue sharing business advice with each other by phone, mail and email. Surrounded by business professionals, 20 club members develop business plans, strategic plans and marketing plans that position their companies for success. Just like a house needs a firm foundation, every business and business leader needs access to education, the latest industry information and strategic opportunities. NAHB and the 20 club program provide builders and remodelers with this opportunity.

Access to data

Comparison of performance data among builders nationally has been an invaluable aspect of our participation in the Builder 20 Group. By analyzing this data, we gain insights into what other builders are doing across the country, allowing us to benchmark our own performance and identify areas for improvement. This data-driven approach helps us make informed decisions about where to allocate resources, how to prioritize investments, and how to enhance our customer service offerings. Ultimately, having access to this data gives us confidence in our business setup, ensuring that we are operating efficiently, effectively, and in line with industry standards.

Tailored support from industry partners

One of the perks of being in the Builder 20 Group is the personalized support members get from industry partners like Andersen Windows and Generac. From dedicated sales teams to specialized service, these partnerships have enhanced our business operations and customer service.

We still have a couple of spots in our Builders 20 group, so let us know if you’re a builder or remodeler looking for a supportive group to help you grow your business.
